Lieutenant David Prather

The Department's Traffic Unit has a focused mission: The thorough investigation of traffic crashes and crash reduction through enforcement & education.

The Traffic Unit closely monitors trends throughout the City to identify high-crash areas, conducts directed enforcement of violations that contribute to those crashes, and helps to develop specific solutions to increase the safety of those who rely on Franklin's roadway system. Traffic Unit Officers receive advanced training in traffic operations and crash investigation.

The Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is a component of the Traffic Unit. The team consists of a group of highly trained officers responsible for the investigation of fatal and serious-injury crashes. This team also works with detectives to provide detailed scene reconstruction diagrams at serious & complex crime scenes.

Traffic Unit Officers specialize in the detection and apprehension of impaired drivers operating motor vehicles.

The Unit works closely with the Governor's Highway Safety Office in developing traffic safety programs, conducting sobriety checkpoints, and the utilization of grants to pay for personnel and equipment used to keep Franklin's roadways safe.

The Franklin Police Department encourages all drivers to drive responsibly, and remember:
"Drive Drunk, Get Nailed"

Child Passenger Safety
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children in the United States, but many of these deaths can be prevented. Placing children in age and size appropriate restraint systems reduces serious and fatal injuries by more than half.

The Franklin Police Department is pleased to help you protect your children by providing Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians to assist parents & caregivers with the proper installation and use child restraint systems.

For assistance with your child restraint system or more information on how to protect your children, contact our Child Passenger Safety Technicians at (615) 794-2513 ext. 5810. Technicians are also available for school, daycare, and other community outreach event programs.

For more information or special requests, contact the Traffic Unit Supervisor,
Lieutenant David Prather at (615) 550-6828.
