There are a variety of ways to get around on foot in Franklin and the City continues to invest in new sidewalks, multi-use paths, and ADA improvements. Whether for leisure, commuting, or exercise, the City seeks to become a more walkable community. 

Several significant capital projects with pedestrian improvements are under construction or in the planning phases including McEwen Drive, the Long Lane overpass, Robinson Lake Dam and Park, and The Pearline Bransford Complex (Pearl Park).

The following capital projects improved bicycle and pedestrian friendliness and were completed in the last five years:

1. Improvements to Jordan Road concluded in 2025 and include sidewalks, bike lanes, and street lights.
2. The City completed a pedestrian bridge over the Harpeth River connecting the Park at Harlinsdale Farm to the Chestnut Bend multi-use trail network in 2024. Funding was provided by TDOT through the Transportation Alternatives Program. 
3. The New Highway 96 West multi-use trail from Hillsboro Road to Front Street was completed in 2023. This 2.7-mile segment was constructed in phases over several years and also included grant funding from TDOT. 
4. The City completed a 0.6-mile streetscape project in 2023 on Franklin Road connecting Downtown to the Factory. The enhancements included sidewalk connections for the first time between these areas. 
   
5. TDOT constructed a 3-mile multi-use trail in 2022 as part of the Mack Hatcher Parkway Northwest Extension. 

The City invests approximately $250,000 annually completing sidewalk gaps and ADA improvements. Recently completed sidewalk gap projects include the following:

1. Sidewalk gap at the corner of Murfreesboro Road and South Royal Oaks near Mapco.
2. Along Liberty Pike from Columbia State Community College to McKay’s Mill. 
3. Along South Royal Oaks Blvd. and Oak Meadow Drive
4. A small section on Down’s Blvd. from Partnership Circle to the new sidewalk at the Storage Unit Facility.
5. Along Fieldstone Farms Parkway and Lexington Parkway.
6. Connecting Del Rio Pike to New Highway 96 West on the FSSD-owned Poplar Grove and Freedom Intermediate Schools property, with a connection to Founders Pointe.
