200 Kilowatt Solar Project and Expansion

In 2012, the City executed an innovative renewable energy project for a 200 kilowatt ground mounted solar array at the City’s Water Reclamation Facility through a partnership with Energy Source Partners.  We utilized a vacant, former sludge field to create a low impact solar project without an outlay of municipal funds.  The power generated was sold and transmitted to the electric grid under a purchase agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority and an interconnection agreement with Middle Tennessee Electric.

In 2024, the solar array was expanded and upgraded, including the addition of flow batteries to help reduce energy usage during times of peak demand. The energy generated powers on-site operations and helps offset the City’s annual $1.4 million electricity cost for the plant.  The upgraded facility will also be surrounded by a large colorful pollinator garden.  

1 Megawatt Solar Project

In 2016, a public/private solar project was completed on approximately five acres at the Water Reclamation Facility.  This system utilizes single-axis trackers that follow the sun throughout the day to increase renewable energy production.  The partnership includes an interconnection with Middle Tennessee Electric to the electric grid and the Tennessee Valley Authority purchases the power. The City receives a share in the revenue and the owner of the system is responsible for continued maintenance.

These are projects supported by the Sustainability Commission and the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
