Q. Do I need a fire permit to modify under 12 sprinkler heads?
A. Yes, you need to obtain a permit; however, you do not need to provide plans for review. Plans are not required for light-hazard-only automatic sprinkler system modifications or installations in commercial buildings, residential, apartments, cooperatives, or condominiums involving 12 sprinkler heads or less and not affecting K-factor, hazard classification, increased system coverage, or shifting of any cross mains or risers. A fire sprinkler contractor must submit a permit application, pay a permit fee, and undergo at least one inspection to ensure compliance with codes and standards. These are five business-day turnaround plan reviews.
Q. Do I need a fire permit to modify under 12 fire alarm devices?
A. Yes, you need to obtain a permit; however, you do not need to provide shop drawings. The city's electrical plan reviewer requires the intent electrical drawings to be submitted from the architectural plan set for their low-voltage permit. A fire alarm contractor must submit a permit application, pay a permit fee, and undergo at least one inspection to ensure compliance with codes and standards. These are five business-day turnaround plan reviews.
Q. Can fire alarm and sprinkler plans be submitted as part of the architectural plan review?
A. No, fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems require their own permit and cannot be included in the architectural plan review.

Q. What is the local ordinance when fire sprinklers are required in a structure?
A. A fire sprinkler system shall be provided for all new and renovated buildings of 5,000 square feet or more gross floor area.
