Spring Forward With Safety In Mind
Time change is good time to prepare for emergencies
Franklin, TN – With the potential for severe weather in the forecast and the time change this weekend, the Franklin Fire Department encourages you to take a few moments to prepare for emergencies. Assemble an emergency power kit and make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms work:
Emergency power kit: Have a portable cell phone charger and a working flashlight for each family member with extra batteries. Candles pose a particularly dangerous risk of fires in stormy conditions, especially when there’s a potential for a gas leak. A battery-powered or hand crank radio is also advised.
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms: Replace batteries once per year or when the alarm “chirps” with a low battery warning. The backup battery in hardwired alarms needs to be replaced once per year as well. (Exception – in alarms that have 10-year lithium, or “long life” batteries, you cannot and should not replace the lithium batteries.) Replace your entire alarm according to the manufacturer’s instructions – generally every 10 years for smoke alarms, and every 5–7 years for CO alarms.
