Franklin, TN – A Wednesday afternoon fire caused significant interior damage to the Half Way Market & Diner. The business was closed and unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
The Franklin Fire Department was dispatched to the restaurant at 1419 W. Main St. at 4:32 PM after a neighbor reported the fire. Crews arrived in less than four minutes to find heavy smoke billowing from the rear of the structure. Firefighters immediately stretched an attack line and searched the building, confirming it was unoccupied.
Simultaneously, crews initiated vertical ventilation by cutting a hole in the roof to release heat and smoke. The swift response allowed firefighters to bring the fire under control in just under 30 minutes. Crews remained on scene for a total of three hours to extinguish hot spots, check for hidden fire extension, and assist with investigating the cause of the fire.
Franklin Fire Marshal Andy King stated that the fire originated in the restaurant's kitchen. The cause is undetermined. The exterior of the building was saved, but interior damage is estimated at $200,000.
Franklin Fire Chief Glenn Johnson noted the department's personal connection to the business. “The Half Way Market and Diner is a local landmark where people come together like family,” Johnson said. “Many of our own personnel make it a part of their weekly routine for great food and fellowship. We are incredibly relieved that no one was injured, but we share in the community's heartbreak over this loss.”
Franklin Alderman Brandy Blanton echoed those sentiments, highlighting the city's strong response. “The amount of support Half Way has already received speaks to how important it is to our community. Apart from providing food to its patrons, it provides a sense of place for residents and visitors to our town. Plans are underway for everyone to be able to show their support to owners, Paul and Kellye King and their staff.”
