Franklin, TN – On March 1st, the Franklin Fire Department celebrated outstanding accomplishments for 2016 and 2017 at an awards ceremony held at the Williamson County Community Enrichment Center.  In addition to honoring the successes and exceptional achievements for fire department and community members, personnel who had been recently promoted to a higher rank in the department were also recognized.

Doug Griffin, a DJ with 94.1 FM, served as master of ceremonies.  Mayor Ken Moore, City Administrator Eric Stuckey, Fire Chief Rocky Garzarek, and Franklin resident and entrepreneur Robbie Grayson, who survived a medical emergency with the assistance of Franklin Firefighters, joined him in recognizing the honorees.

Meritorious Service Award

On April 17, 2017, Captain David Kolak, Lieutenant Matthew Stout, Engineer Jeff Boggs, Firefighter-Paramedics Kevin Hunt and Michael Radom, and Firefighter Austin Cooper successfully extricated a patient from an overturned vehicle in a creek at the base of a steep embankment off I-65, during heavy rain and rising water.

Phoenix Awards

Phoenix Awards are presented to firefighters for saving the life a patient in cardiac arrest.  There were eight (8) Phoenix Awards presented:

 August 5, 2016 – Deputy Chief Andrew King, Battalion Chief Joseph Polenzani, Captain David Kolak, Lieutenant-Paramedic Richard Schatz, Engineer Larry Woody, and Firefighters Austin Cooper, Dustin Sinclair and Brian Slanaker.

 September 20, 2016 – Engineers Christopher McElvain and Paul Seltz, Firefighter-Paramedic Alan Fulwood, and Firefighters James Demastus and Jayce Pickle.

 November 8, 2016 – Lieutenant-Paramedic Brian Brandon, Engineers Dale Lott and Todd Stapleton, and Firefighter-Paramedics Matthew Engelsdorfer and Michael Henry.

March 8, 2017 – Lieutenant Sean Smith, Engineer-Paramedic David Dodd, Engineer Billy Lampley, Firefighter-Paramedic Seth Frost, and Firefighters Gregory Lestarjette and Jerry Thomas.

March 19, 2017 – Captain Jonathan Jenkins, Engineer-Paramedic Dustin Anderson, Engineers William Edward Proctor and Paul Seltz, Firefighter-Paramedic Alan Fulwood, and Firefighter Jayce Pickle.

April 12, 2017 – Lieutenant Steve Raymer, Firefighter-Paramedic Tyler Chatham, and Firefighter Jason Morgan.

May 10, 2017 – Lieutenant-Paramedic Brian Brandon, Lieutenant Todd Stapleton, Engineer Dale Lott, Firefighter-Paramedic Michael Henry, and Firefighter James Ruffin.

September 6, 2017 – Captain Jonathan Jenkins, Engineer-Paramedic Dustin Anderson, Engineer William Edward Proctor, Firefighter-Paramedics Blake Lobel and Adam Miller, and Firefighter Jayce Pickle.

Stork Award

Lieutenant Andrew Ivey, Engineer Rodney Ballington, Firefighter-Paramedics Daniel Burke and Joseph Burwell, and Firefighters Keith McVoy and Brandon Robinson helped deliver a healthy baby boy on January 27, 2016.

Exemplary Service Award

On November 22, 2016, Lieutenant Lloyd Baxter, Engineer-Paramedic Dustin Anderson, Engineer Paul Seltz, and Firefighters Scottie Chambers and David Cloud successfully resuscitated a patient, affording that individual and grateful family members an opportunity to say goodbye prior to the patient’s passing a few days later.

Fire Chief’s Award

There were three (3) Fire Chief’s Awards presented, to those who were deployed in 2016 and 2017:

Sevier County/Gatlinburg Wildland Fire Deployment, November 29 – December 3, 2016 – Deputy Chiefs Todd Horton and Glenn Johnson, Battalion Chief Greg Baltimore, Captain Michael Pardue, Lieutenants Jeremy Martin and Kirk McGee, Engineers Thomas Anderson, Jeff Boggs and Jon Krawcyk, Firefighter-Paramedic Nathan Vetitoe, and Firefighter Andrew Adams.

Southeast Texas/Hurricane Harvey Deployment, August 30 – September 5, 2017 – Deputy Chiefs Todd Horton and Glenn Johnson, Captain Gregory Wild, Lieutenants Kirk McGee and Matthew Stout, Engineer-Paramedic Dustin Anderson, Firefighter-Paramedic Joseph Burwell, and Firefighters Rob Thomas and Todd Wilson.

Northern Florida/Hurricane Irma Deployment, September 8 – 15, 2017 – Deputy Chief Glenn Johnson, Captain Michael Pardue, Lieutenant Jonathan Gill, Firefighter-Paramedic Terry Storey, and Firefighter Rob Thomas.

Appreciation Award

Firefighter-Paramedics Ryan Naylor and Christopher Shadowens received an Appreciation Award for helping the Franklin Fire Department during a critical shortage of emergency telecommunicators.  They volunteered for reassignment to the City of Franklin’s Emergency Communications Center from June 20th to November 18th, 2016. 

Noteworthy Calls

On May 14, 2016, Lieutenant-Paramedic Michael Henderson, Firefighter-Paramedic Brandy Demastus, and Firefighters Austin Cooper, Joshua Meeks, and Daniel Willems successfully treated a patient who was in anaphylactic shock.

On June 18, 2017, Lieutenant Charlene Forehand and Firefighter-Paramedics James Gambill and Shane Wyatt successfully treated a patient who had a severe traumatic head injury.  The patient’s injury was so severe that Reader’s Digest recently featured her in an article titled, “The Most Miraculous Medical Recoveries of 2017.”

Promotions

Firefighters who had been recently promoted were presented with their new badges which were pinned to their uniforms by a family member or friend.  Paramedics Brian Brandon and Richard Schatz were promoted to the rank of lieutenant.  Paramedic Dustin Anderson, Jason McCord and Christopher McElvain were promoted to the rank of Engineer.

Citizen Commendations

Dr. Dana Hardy, a resident of Franklin’s Westhaven community, and Dinah Wade, a Library Media Specialist at Freedom Intermediate and Williamson County Fire and Rescue Volunteer Firefighter, were honored with Citizen Commendations for their support of the Franklin Fire Department.

Certificates of Recognition

Lieutenant-Paramedic Brian Brandon and Firefighter – Paramedics Alan Fulwood, Kevin Hunt, and Jason Webb were honored for receiving the Education Service Award from the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians at the EMS World Expo on October 18th, 2017.  The award was presented in recognition of the Tactical Emergency Casualty Care training they implemented in 2016 to prepare responders for civilian tactical emergencies such as active shooter events.

Battalion Chief Eddie House, Captains Clay Mackey and Scott Mainord, and Firefighter – Paramedic Alex Enochs were honored for receiving a Citizen Commendation Award from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department for rescuing an unresponsive driver from a burning vehicle that had crashed on I-65 in Davidson County.  The incident occurred while they were off duty on October 16, 2016.

The Franklin Fire Department’s Child Passenger Safety team was honored for being selected as the 2017 Child Passenger Safety Fitting Station of the Year by the Tennessee Highway Safety Office.  Team members are Captains Clay Mackey and Jose Periut, Lieutenants Chris Brown, Jonathan Gill, Jeremy Martin, and Roddie Petty, Engineers Thomas Alexander and Richard Hasley, Firefighter-Paramedics Wes Bryant, Nick Darnell, James Miller, Christopher Shadowens, and Jason Webb, Firefighters John Carolan, Austin Cooper, Gregory Lestarjette, Jayce Pickle, Brandon Robinson, and Gregory Tucker, and Fire & Life Safety Educator Jamie Melton.

Deputy Chief Andy King was recognized for receiving the 2017 H.D. Crossnine Award from the Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs.  The award was presented in recognition of King’s significant contributions to the development and promotion of fire and life safety codes at the national, state, and local levels. 

Lieutenant Geoff Woolard was recognized for being named an Honorary Lifetime Member of the International Association of Arson Investigators Tennessee Chapter on August 4th, 2017, in recognition of his significant commitment and contributions to the organization. 

JD Fotopoulos Memorial Award

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the establishment of the JD Fotopoulos Memorial Award was announced.  Named in honor of Franklin Firefighter-Paramedic JD Fotopoulos, who passed away in 2016 while on a mission trip in Honduras, the award will be presented in the future to Franklin Fire Department personnel with outstanding volunteer service.
